Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has underscored the necessity of Nigeria transitioning back to a parliamentary system of government. Speaking at a lecture at Harvard Law School in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, Obi argued that the current presidential system fails to hold leaders accountable, resulting in prolonged terms of ineffective governance.
Obi emphasized the drawbacks of the presidential system, noting that it allows for leaders to evade accountability and remain in power for extended periods without adequate oversight. He highlighted the inability of citizens to hold leaders accountable within the four-year presidential term, contrasting this with the potential for more immediate repercussions in a parliamentary system.
In advocating for a return to a parliamentary system, Obi proposed a framework where the president would also serve as a member of parliament, ensuring regular interactions with constituents. He emphasized the importance of direct engagement between elected leaders and the electorate, emphasizing the need for greater transparency and accountability in governance.
