The former spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) 2023 Presidential Campaign Organisation, Daniel Bwala, has attacked a former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, for condemning borrowing by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
SaharaReporters earlier reported that Obi berated the Nigerian government for its excessive borrowing without a corresponding record of proper utilisation.
Obi, a former Anambra governor, in a series of posts on his X handle on Tuesday, expressed concerns over the Nigerian government’s debt burden, saying the country’s accumulating debts were having negative effects on the economy.
He said what had become more worrisome was that there had been no corresponding visible usage or investments of the loans as required by the law, to show their impact on the nation’s development.
“My appeal to the government of the day is to de-accelerate the borrowing, and let us first re-evaluate what has been achieved with previous borrowings and make better decisions for the good of the nation.
“In the New Nigeria of our dream, our scarce resources will not only be duly accounted for but will be productively and prudently managed in moving our nation from consumption to production,” part of Obi’s post read.
In his reaction in a post on his X handle on Wednesday, Bwala, a PDP chieftain who recently declared support for Tinubu, berated Obi for condemning the President for borrowing.
Bwala said that as a governor, Obi grew Anambra State’s debt stock by over 1,000 percent from N16 million the state recorded when he assumed office to over N3 billion when he left office.
Bwala wrote, “Mr Peter “Gbajue” Obi @PeterObi is condemning @officialABAT for borrowing but during his time as Governor of Anambra he grew Anambra state debt stock by over 1000% from under N16m that it was before he took office to over N3bn by the time he handed over.”
