According to NLC spokesperson Benson Upah, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the upcoming 2023 elections, has the liberty to depart from the party at his own discretion.
On Sunday, Upah reiterated the NLC’s position on Julius Abure’s leadership and emphasized that despite what they perceive as an ‘illegitimate’ national convention that reinstated Abure as the Labour Party’s national chairman, the NLC will not acknowledge his leadership.
Upah emphasized, “Our stance on this matter remains unchanged. Abure is still unrecognized by us. It is not about removal. To our knowledge, he does not even exist.”
In a related occurrence, the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists, comprising retired workers, called for the resignations of both Julius Abure and NLC President Joe Ajaero due to their ongoing leadership dispute.
Peter Obi reportedly clashed with the Labour Party’s leadership regarding the conduct of the convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State.
Expressing his discontent during a session on X, Obi stated that he refrained from attending the national convention because the party leadership disregarded his plea for broader consultations with stakeholders before the event.
Recent statements by Obi have sparked speculation that he might be contemplating a move to a different political platform, notwithstanding being assured the 2027 ticket at the convention.
Nonetheless, Upah clarified that the decision for Obi to stay or leave the party rests with him, asserting that he holds the autonomy to determine his political trajectory.
Describing the former Anambra governor as a valuable asset, Upah mentioned that the NLC would not impede him if he opted to depart from the party.
“The choice lies with Mr. Obi. Should he opt to exit the party, that is his prerogative.
“We cannot pass judgment on him for that. Should he decide to remain, undeniably, Peter Obi is an invaluable asset. That is my final word on the matter,” Upah concluded.
