Former Labor Party presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi has strongly criticized the ongoing electricity crisis in Nigeria, attributing it to a lack of political will.
Obi stressed the urgent need for decisive action to rectify the situation, highlighting Tanzania’s success story as a potential model for Nigeria to emulate.
Obi drew attention to a recent report from Tanzania, where excess electricity led to the closure of several hydroelectric power stations.
He contrasted this with Nigeria’s struggle to provide enough electricity to major cities and rural areas despite being Africa’s most populous country.
Citing a World Bank report, Obi underlined the role of political will in Tanzania’s remarkable progress in electricity access, which increased from seven percent in 2011 to almost 40 percent in 2020.
In stark contrast, Nigeria continues to struggle with a staggering 60 percent of the population living without electricity, according to the Energy Progress Report 2022.
Obi expressed dismay over the ongoing energy shortage in Nigeria and stressed the need for urgent intervention to alleviate economic losses and promote national development.
He called on the government to prioritize the revitalization of the energy sector with a nationalistic approach, emphasizing the importance of competent and committed leadership in achieving tangible results.
Obi reiterated his commitment to a “New Nigeria,” anchored on a stable energy sector, and called for concerted efforts to address the long-standing electricity challenges facing the country.
