Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized the ongoing electricity crisis in Nigeria, attributing it to a lack of political will.
Obi emphasized the urgent need for decisive action to rectify the situation, highlighting the success story of Tanzania as a potential model for Nigeria to emulate.
Obi drew attention to a recent report from Tanzania, where surplus electricity led to the shutdown of several hydroelectric stations.
He contrasted this with Nigeria’s struggle to provide adequate electricity for its major cities and rural areas, despite being the most populous country in Africa.
Citing a World Bank report, Obi underscored the role of political will in Tanzania’s remarkable progress in electricity access, which surged from seven percent in 2011 to nearly 40 percent in 2020.
In stark contrast, Nigeria continues to grapple with a staggering 60 percent of its population living without electricity, according to the 2022 Energy Progress Report.
Expressing dismay over Nigeria’s persistent energy deficit, Obi emphasized the need for urgent intervention to mitigate economic losses and enhance national development.
He called on the government to prioritize the revitalization of the power sector with a nationalistic approach, emphasizing the importance of competent and committed leadership in achieving tangible results.
Obi reiterated his commitment to a “New Nigeria” anchored on a stable power sector and called for concerted efforts to address the longstanding electricity challenges facing the nation.
