Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr. Peter Obi, has criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for proceeding with the controversial Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project despite public outcry.
He expressed dismay that the government is pursuing a project that threatens jobs at a time of widespread unemployment.
Obi emphasized that urgent national priorities include security, poverty eradication, healthcare, and education, particularly for the poor and underprivileged.
He described the reported demolition of businesses and residences in the project’s right of way as insensitive and heartbreaking, leading to the loss of livelihoods and investments.
In a post on his social media handle, Obi stated, “The outcry against this project has been overwhelming due to the current situation in the country.
However, reports as of yesterday indicate that demolition of businesses and residences in the designated right of way for the project has commenced from the Lagos end.”
He highlighted the potential loss of thousands of jobs and investments exceeding $200 million, with over 100,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector at risk.
Obi questioned the rationale and timing of the project, noting that Nigeria’s economy is struggling, and basic necessities of life are beyond reach for most citizens.
Obi concluded by urging the government to prioritize essential projects and discontinue the Lagos-Calabar highway project, emphasizing that Nigeria cannot afford another expensive abandoned project.
He stressed that the nation’s urgent development needs, including security, poverty eradication, healthcare, and education, should take precedence.
