The former presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has praised the decision of President Bola Tinubu-led administration to adopt the Oronsaye Report.

In a statement shared via his official handle on Wednesday, Obi expressed his support for the implementation of the report, emphasizing that he would have taken a similar step if he were the President.

Obi highlighted the significance of the Oronsaye Report in making governance more efficient, cost-effective, and productive.

He stated, “Implementing the report is one of the best ways to make governance efficient, cost-effective, and productive.”

The former presidential candidate emphasized the importance of constructive engagement, even from the opposition, stating, “Being in opposition does not warrant blind and thoughtless criticism. Whenever the government takes the right decision, we should agree and if need be, propose related or even better ideas to move the nation forward.”

In reference to his previous responses during campaigns, Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the principles outlined in the Oronsaye Report, which includes reducing the cost of governance, eliminating overlapping responsibilities, and enhancing efficiency and effectiveness.

While acknowledging the long-overdue implementation of the report, Obi urged the government to extend efforts to cut the overall cost of governance across all sectors.

He stressed the need for a deep understanding of the federal bureaucracy and the intricate relationships between federal and state agencies to effectively implement the report.

Obi also called for a thoughtful approach to mitigate the impact of downsizing on workers and to provide a clear plan for the redeployment of saved resources.

He urged transparency in showcasing the amount of resources to be saved and their intended reallocation.

Obi also emphasized the need for a comprehensive template to prevent future government bloating. He stated, “By doing the right things and implementing the right policies, we will build the New Nigeria of our dreams.”
