Assuring transparency in his campaign, Labour Party’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has confirmed the accountability of all donations received during the last poll by his campaign team.
Obi revealed that the Obi-Datti campaign team has initiated the public disclosure of the funds received in the 2023 presidential election.
This comes in response to allegations by the suspended National Treasurer, Oluchi Opara, who accused the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, of misappropriating N3.5 billion.
In response, Abure refuted the claims and threatened legal action against Opara.
Obi took to X to announce, “Yesterday, we began the public accounting process for Obi-Datti Campaign Funds for the 2023 general election, starting with the crowdfunding, where we sought contributions from the general public for our endeavor.”
He added, “We will continue with this process, ensuring that we provide an account to those who supported us, either in cash or in kind, assuring them that their contributions were utilized appropriately for the intended purpose, for which they graciously and, in some cases, immeasurably supported us.”
“We will also guide various support groups and bodies that worked towards our collective goal of ushering in a New Nigeria to do the same by providing an account to their donors.”
Furthermore, he emphasized, “As I previously mentioned after the Supreme Court judgement, in 2024, starting from the end of the first quarter, we will embark on a Thank You tour to the various places we visited, in order to personally express our gratitude to our supporters.”
“We will also showcase the tangible success we achieved through the efficient management of their resources, despite having less than 20 percent of our budget to work with.”
“The generous support of our donors and their unwavering dedication and commitment to the democratic process, to which we are deeply committed, has not gone unnoticed. Despite the challenges and obstacles we faced, they remained steadfast and played a pivotal role in shaping the future of our nation.”
