The Kaduna State House of Assembly on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 set up a fact-finding and investigating committee to critically look into the financial dealings, loans and grants other projects implementation under former Governor Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai covering a period of May 29, 2015 to May 29, 2023.

The development followed the accusation by Governor Uba Sani at a Town Hall meeting during which he alleged that the debt burden left behind by his predecessor in office, Malam Nasir El-Rufai to the tune of $587 million, N85 billion, and 115 contractual liabilities has strangulated the State financially thereby unable to pay workers’ salaries.

Governor Sani also said the debt burden was made worse as a result of the rise in the exchange rate of the Naira against the United States Dollars, a situation that has forced the State to be paying almost triple the amount that was borrowed by the El-Rufai-led administration.

The Governor said that the State was left with N3 billion out of the N10 billion monthly allocation from the Federation Account Allocation owing to the fact N7 billion was being used to service the debt per month.

Sani however, said that his administration has conducted a thorough assessment of the situation and thereby sharpening its focus, adding that in spite of the huge debt inherited, the State has not borrowed a single kobo.
