In response to escalating concerns regarding Nigeria’s food security, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 General Election, has once again sounded the alarm, highlighting the detrimental impact of terrorism and banditry on farmers’ access to their lands.

Expressing deep concern over recent publications and warnings from international agencies, Obi emphasized the urgent need to address the looming food crisis. In a statement posted on his official platform, he reiterated his consistent advocacy for tackling this growing threat, which has tragically claimed lives across the nation.

Citing a recent report indicating a significant increase in the number of food-insecure Nigerians, Obi stressed that the situation is even more dire than depicted. He referenced an earlier forecast projecting a staggering 31.5 million Nigerians to face acute hunger by mid-year, emphasizing the gravity of the crisis.

Obi underscored the devastating consequences of ongoing attacks on farmers by bandits and terrorists, leading to widespread abandonment of farmlands and loss of life. He highlighted the dire situation in states like Sokoto, where farmers have resorted to paying exorbitant sums in ransom to secure access to their lands, with numerous lives lost to insecurity.

Emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention to address insecurity and facilitate farmers’ return to their lands, Obi reaffirmed the possibility of building a new, hunger-free Nigeria.
