  • Labour Party faction calls on Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar to emulate Liberia’s election spirit, congratulating President-elect Bola Tinubu
  • The party highlights George Weah and Joseph Boakai’s graceful concession as a model for Nigerian leaders, urging support for reforms

The Lamidi Apapa-led faction of the Labour Party has urged its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the Peoples Democratic Party’s Atiku Abubakar to follow the example set by the recent Liberian election and congratulate President Bola Tinubu.

The President-elect of Liberia, Joseph Boakai, defeated the incumbent, George Weah, who graciously conceded defeat after the electoral umpire announced Boakai as the winner with 50.9 percent of the vote, while Weah garnered 49.1 percent.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Saturday, the spokesperson for the LP faction, Abayomi Arabambi, highlighted that both Weah and Boakai demonstrated that elections are not a do-or-die affair but a process that should not be won at any cost. Arabambi also pointed out that former President Goodluck Jonathan exhibited the same spirit.

Arabambi urged Atiku and Obi to join Tinubu in the nation-building process, emphasizing that the time is ripe for them to congratulate President Tinubu after exploring all constitutional and electoral avenues.

He stated, “The incumbent, despite losing his second term as President yesterday, did not wait for anyone before he congratulated the winner. As a responsible leader, former President Goodluck Jonathan did the same, like George Weah, and today he is being reckoned with as a great pillar of democracy.”

The Labour Party appealed to Obi and Atiku to support the administration, have faith in ongoing reforms, and encourage a spirit of sportsmanship in Nigerian leaders.
