Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 general elections, has urged the government to contribute towards the advancement of health institutions. He emphasized the crucial role of health workers in shaping a healthy and robust nation.
During a donation event where he presented a cheque of N10m to the College of Nursing Sciences at the Saint Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital in Onitsha, Anambra State, the former Anambra State governor recalled learning about the first nurse produced in Nigeria by the Iyi-Enu School of Nursing in Anambra.
Obi emphasized the importance of supporting critical institutions like the College of Nursing for their development. He highlighted the essential role of nurses in providing directions to doctors and emphasized the global need for nursing professionals.
After presenting the cheque, Obi spoke with journalists, stressing the need to prioritize key sectors such as health, education, and poverty alleviation. He underscored the significance of investing in health workers and primary healthcare providers.
He emphasized the importance of training health workers to eliminate the need for medical tourism abroad, especially using public resources.
Receiving the cheque on behalf of the college management, Most Rev Valerian Okeke, the Proprietor of the College of Nursing Sciences at St Charles Borromeo Specialist Hospital, thanked Obi for his continuous support over the years. Okeke expressed gratitude for the ongoing assistance and support from various individuals and highlighted the trust placed in the college by the Federal Government when it was upgraded to a college.
