As much as this is a very sad and alarming situation , I think that perhaps that this happened in the most western state of the country , Kebbi , is indicative of the fact possibly the bandits are being pushed further west because of the renewed offensive against them by the army who are bombing them in central Nigeria using planes , tanks , artillery and APC's.

I think that the new COAS appears to be working , after the mess he received upon appointment to the position. If we notice , they are not using IED's or suicide bombers.
