The abductors of approximately 300 students from LEA Primary School in Kuriga village, Kaduna State, have demanded a staggering ransom of N1 billion for their release. The harrowing incident, which occurred on March 7, marks the first mass abduction in Nigeria since 2021. Community leader Aminu revealed that the kidnappers contacted him via phone on Tuesday to convey their ransom demand. The abducted students, along with some older students and school staff, were taken captive, with only a few managing to escape unharmed.

Nigeria’s Information Minister, Mohammed Idris Malagi, reiterated the government’s stance that security forces should prioritise securing the safe release of the captives without succumbing to the demands of the abductors. This development underscores the urgency of addressing the pervasive issue of insecurity and ensuring the safety of students and communities across the country.
