Ethnic Origin: Tiv
Full Story
In the heart of Tiv land, where storytelling is cherished as an art, there lived a wise elder named Ioryan. Known for his creativity, Ioryan would gather the villagers around the fire each night to share tales that were both entertaining and instructive. Over time, he began to craft puppets to act out his stories, adding a new layer of excitement and wonder to his performances.
One day, during a festival celebrating the harvest, Ioryan introduced a grand performance using his puppets. The puppets, made from carved wood and colorful fabric, danced and acted out stories of bravery, wisdom, and the triumph of good over evil. The villagers were enchanted, and the festival became an annual tradition, known as the Kwagh-Hir Puppet Festival.
Legend has it that one year, as Ioryan prepared for the festival, a mischievous forest spirit visited him. The spirit challenged Ioryan, saying, “If your puppets can bring laughter and teach wisdom, I will bless your craft with eternal inspiration. But if they fail, I will take away your voice.”
Unfazed, Ioryan accepted the challenge. On the day of the festival, he performed with such skill and creativity that even the spirit was moved to laughter. True to its word, the spirit blessed the Kwagh-Hir puppetry, ensuring that it would remain a vibrant and celebrated tradition in Tiv culture.
To this day, the Kwagh-Hir Puppet Festival continues to captivate audiences, preserving the stories, values, and creativity of the Tiv people.
