Ivory Coast fans voiced a mix of disappointment and cautious optimism as they left an outdoor viewing area Thursday night following a 1-0 loss to the Super Eagles of the Nigeria in their Group A clash.

A second-half penalty at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium settled the encounter between the West African heavyweights. The match was a largely languid affair, dominated by physical battles and with few clear-cut chances created.

The result means Nigeria moves above the AFCON hosts in the standings with four points along with Equatorial Guinea, who beat Guinea Bissau 4-2 earlier. The hosts have three.

The Nations Cup hosts play Equatorial Guinea on Monday, January 22.
