32 countries started this competition and we are now down to the final 16 teams. And it is about time for Nigeria Super Falcons and the Three Lionesses of England Round of 16 match at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

England the 4th ranked team in the world initially had a slow start to the competition, narrowly winning 1 goal to nil against Haiti and Denmark in their first two games. However, they bounced back scoring an impressive 6 goals in their third group match against China to finish unbeaten and secure the top spot in the group with 9 points.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria ranked 40th in the world also finished the group unbeaten, starting with a goalless draw against 7th ranked team Canada in their opening game before stunning the 10th ranked team and co-hosts Australia 3 goas to 2 in their second match. They then played another goalless draw against the 22nd ranked team, the Republic of Ireland in their last group game, securing the second-place finish unbeaten with 5 points.

It is important to note that our record against European teams at the FIFA Women’s World Cup has not been great. From a total of 14 games, we have recorded a whooping 10 losses, 3 draws and just 1 win.

In 1995, The Three Lionesses defeated the Super Falcons 3 goals to 2, and now 28 years later the current European champions will be aiming to defeat the most successful team in African Female Football History this time around?

England has been to 6 editions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup and their best performance was as bronze medalist in 2015, while Nigeria have been to every edition since inception, however our best performance was as quarterfinalists in 1999.

The Super Falcons have never played more than 4 matches at a single edition of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, we usually just play 3 or exactly 4 matches and go home. But I am hoping it is different this time around.

A win in this game is worth an additional 30,000 dollars for each player who already have $60,000 dollars guaranteed for reaching the round of 16. It seems FIFA would be paying the players through their respective national associations and not directly to their account. And I think the FAs will pay these players their complete fees without delays this time around.

It is no news that this English side is very talented, watch out for Chelsea Player Lauren James who scored 2 goals and assisted 3 times in their last game against China to Goalkeeper Mary Earps, to Keira Walsh, Chloe Kelly, Georgia Stanway, Rachael Daly, Alex Greenwood, Millie Bright and Lucy Bronze who would be instrumental in defense.

Of course England is stronger on paper, they are the current European champions and are one of the favorite to win this competition. England scored 8 goals and conceded just once at the group stage, keeping 2 clean sheets, while Nigeria scored 3 goals and conceded twice, also keeping two clean sheets.

You can watch the game live on Super Sports on your DSTV or GOTV if you’re in Nigeria. The match will also be shown live online for free on AfroSports. To watch the highlights, it will be available on FIFA Plus.
