The Super Eagles of Nigeria were honored on Tuesday by President Bola Tinibu in Abuja after returning from the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by Côte d’Ivoire, where they finished second.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, three-time African champions, lost the AFCON final 2-1 to hosts Ivory Coast in Abidjan on Sunday.

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday honored each player and official of the Nigerian Super Eagles with the Member of The Order of The Niger national award for securing the silver medal at the just-concluded 2023 Africa Nations Cup.

Each player in the national squad received the Member of the Order of the Niger, one of the country’s highest honors, as well as a flat and a piece of land in the region around the capital.

Tinubu welcomed the returning team at the presidential villa in Abuja, saying he was proud of the side — even if it was tough to stomach the defeat.

“Let this passing event not dispirit us but bring us together to work harder.

“To those cherished Nigerian youths expressing their gifts in communities, drawing lines in the sand as they play football in their humble rectangles of play, you can be our heroes tomorrow, do not relent in your pursuit.

“My administration is here to make dreams come true,” he said.

The Super Eagles team now joins the ranks of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, HRM Eze Isaac Ikonne, Dr. Faisal Shuaibu, Chief Silva Ejeh Ameh, and Alh. Kamoru Ibitoye Yusuf, Mallam Ibrahim Okposi, Alhaji Shehu Uthman, Barr. Chris Ezem, Davido, and Teni have received national honors.

All the Super Eagles team members and officials were in attendance.
