Qualitative research in the humanitarian sector is challenging due to the vulnerability associated with being refugees and internally displaced persons, as well as the history of distrust that exist between researchers and the potential participants.

In this presentation, Tosin Olaluwoye (PhD candidate at the Centre for Humanitarian Leadership, Deakin University) discusses his qualitative research into a highly sensitive topic: sexual violence against men in conflict and post-conflict settings.

Tosin recommends key steps to help researchers recruit participants into qualitative studies with relative ease and to obtain information-rich data in humanitarian settings. He contends that trust is an essential element in studying un-researchable subjects in the humanitarian sector.
