Former governor of Anambra State and presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, Mr. Peter Obi, has called out the Bola Tinubu-led federal government, saying that the administration is not interested in achieving sustainable development goals, which are the hallmarks of taking the nation to a new level.

Obi made the remarks while giving his response, during a media briefing, to the Supreme Court judgment of October 26, 2023, which dismissed the applications brought by him and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for lacking in merit.

He noted that though the pronouncements of the Supreme Court brings a foreclosure to the quest to seek judgment, it was rather sad that the government in power is not given to meeting the needs of Nigerians, adding that he would remain in opposition given the present national circumstances.

He listed the campaign promises of the Labour Party ostensibly tailored towards bringing the nation out of its present quagmire, noting that those are not “the priorities of the present administration”.

He said: “Given our present national circumstances, there is a compelling need for a strong political opposition. We shall, therefore, remain in opposition, especially because of the policies and the governance modalities that we in the Labour Party campaigned for, especially reducing the cost of governance, moving the nation from consumption to production, reducing inflation, ending insecurity, promoting the rule of law, guaranteeing the responsibility to protect, and stabilizing the Nigerian currency; are clearly not the priorities of the present administration nor is it interested in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Obi thanked the teeming Nigerian youths for the support during the campaigns and election, and while the court cases last, promising that the quest to recreate a new Nigeria is still possible.
