Tinubu Fast-Tracks Lagos Rail: A Game-Changer for Transportation

Nigeria’s President Bola Ahmed Tinubu launched the first phase of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) Red Line project on February 29th, 2024. Spanning 37 kilometres, this project holds promise for reducing travel time and enhancing transportation and logistics within the state.

During the opening ceremony, President Tinubu witnessed the signing of the contract for Phase 2 of the LRMT Red Line project, underscoring the government’s commitment to the continued expansion of this vital transportation network. Engr. Abimbola Akinajo, Managing Director of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), and Jason Zhang, Chairman of CCECC Nigeria Limited, officiated the signing.

President Tinubu was joined on the inaugural train ride from Ikeja to Agege by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, several state governors, members of the Federal and State Executive Councils, legislators, the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchun, and a few journalists.

Addressing the gathered audience at the Ikeja station, President Tinubu emphasised the importance of collaboration between the federal and subnational governments in delivering reliable, efficient, and affordable transportation systems nationwide. He directed the Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’idu Alkali, to prioritise this collaborative effort to benefit all Nigerians across the country.
