Peter Obi expressed concern over the allocation of funds in the 2024 fiscal budget for the construction and renovation of residences for the Vice President. He questioned the allocation of N15 billion for a new residence, emphasizing that this move seemed excessive, especially amid pressing national challenges.
Obi highlighted the staggering total of N20.5 billion allotted for the Vice President’s housing, contrasting it against critical issues plaguing the country: poverty, crumbling healthcare, and rising unemployment. He drew attention to the stark difference between the allocated budget and the struggles faced by most Nigerians.
Drawing a comparison, he pointed out that the amount budgeted for the Vice President’s housing equated to the annual salary of approximately 3000 professors, emphasizing the need for investing in human capital rather than excessive luxury.
Obi further criticized the disproportionate allocation, noting that the budget for student loans was a fraction of the cost of the Vice President’s new home, which could educate all indigent Nigerian students. He referenced past leaders, highlighting the exemplary sacrifice made by General Murtala Mohammed, who opted for housing for civil servants over a presidential mansion.
Calling for leadership that exhibits compassion and prudent resource allocation, Obi emphasized the importance of selfless and responsible governance for the country’s progress and development.
