Anambra State lawmakers in the State House of Assembly, on the platform of Labour Party (LP), have tasked President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors on the prevalent security challenges and hardship in the country. The law makers, who are eight out of the 30-member legislature, made the demand just 24 hours after the leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) suspended its nation-wide hunger protest across the country.

They called on the President and 36 governors, including Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, to suspend work on all other sectors, as well as infrastructure, for the next six months and declare a state of emergency on security and hunger in the nation.

The LP legislators, who made this known in a communique jointly signed and made available to newsmen in Awka, the state capital, shortly after their emergency caucus meeting at the state Assembly Complex, were Nkechi Ogbuefi, Henry Mbachu, Jude Ifeanyi Umennajiego, Fred Ezenwa, Kingsley Udemezue, Justice Azuka, Paul Obi and Patrick Okafor.

In the communique, they urged the federal and state governments as follows:
“That the President should suspend work on all sectors, especially infrastructure, for the next six months and declare a state of emergency on security and hunger in the nation.

“All state governors, including Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State, to suspend all infrastructural development for the next six months and declare a state of emergency on security and hunger.

“We, the Labour Party House of Assembly members, will relinquish our basic salary for six months as our contribution to alleviating the suffering of the masses.

“In conclusion, we all know that the campaign is over, and the election is over. Majority of Nigerians are suffering. People are dying every day as a result of hunger and insecurity. Thus, there is a need for the Federal Government and state governments to adhere to the advice given by our leader, Peter Obi. We must commend Obi for this selfless effort to ensure the stability and growth of our nation.”

“It really shows that he is committed to making this nation a better place for all of us.”
