Supreme Court Judgment A Breach Of Citizens’ Confidence In Judiciary – Peter Obi

…Says Apex Court Treated Forgery Allegation Against Tinubu With Levity

…Hints On Contesting 2027 Presidential Election

Peter Obi has described the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed Bola Tinubu’s election as Nigeria’s president as a breach of the citizens’ trust in the judiciary.

The apex court had some weeks ago dismissed the appeals of Obi, who contested under the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 presidential election, and that of his Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) counterpart Atiku Abubakar challenging Tinubu’s victory at the Presidential Election Petition Court (PEPC).

But while reacting to the Supreme Court ruling, Obi accused the apex court of ignoring evidence which he said further dampens citizens’ trust in the judiciary.

“Without equivocation, this judgment amounts to a breach of confidence Nigerians have in our judiciary. To that extent, it is a show of unreasonable force against the very Nigerian people from whom the power of the Nigerian citizens is drawn,” Obi said during a world press conference at the LP National Headquarters in Abuja on Monday.

Despite the Supreme Court verdict, Obi told his supporters that the quest for a new Nigeria has not ended.

“I assure all Nigerians that this is not the end. A new and prosperous Nigerian is not an event, it is not a destination, it’s a journey,” he added.

“I will not give up on the quest for a Nigeria that is founded on: Character, competence, integrity, compassion, rule of law.”

Peter Obi also accused the Supreme Court of treating the allegations of forgery and identity theft against President Bola Tinubu with levity.

Obi lamented that Nigerians would become the victim of such levity.

According to Obi: “The Supreme Court abandoned its responsibility as a court of law. The court decision contravenes the overwhelming evidence of election rigging, the false calm of technical glitches, as well as matters of forgery and identity theft as been brought to light.

“These are hefty allegations that should not have been treated with levity. The Supreme Court transferred a heavy moral burden from the courtroom to our national conscience, our democracy is the victim of this courtroom drama.

“It’s a show of unreasonable force against the very Nigerian people from whom the power of the constitution is drawn.

“Datti and I may have ended our quest but this is just the beginning of our quest for hope for the common Nigerian.”
