Backing the government’s move on a new electricity tariff hike is the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, for the 2023 general elections, Peter Obi.

Expressing his views on Sunday, Obi stated that raising electricity tariffs for the affluent is the optimal approach.

Last week, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission approved a tariff adjustment for Band A consumers.

In response to this development, Obi endorsed it as the remedy for Nigeria’s electricity woes.

He emphasized that a tariff hike for urban areas with the means to support it is logical.

“The solution is straightforward (referring to the electricity tariff increase); tariffs can be raised for those residing in areas where they can manage it.

“There is a need for substantial improvements in power generation because the delay has been extensive. However, we must consider that a vast number of Nigerians are enduring hardships.

“Therefore, we should assist individuals in those regions to sustain themselves and engage in productive activities.

“As they transition to productive efforts, we are aiding them in breaking free from poverty, aligning with my perspective of shifting from consumption to production,” he articulated.
