A strong show of support has been extended to Captain Isaac David Balami as the potential next chairman of the Labour Party (LP) by the Coalition for Peter Obi (CPO), a coalition comprising more than two hundred Peter Obi support groups.

Joining in the endorsement of Balami for the chairmanship role are the Afenifere National Youths Council (ANYC) and the Nigeria Delta Youth Council (NDYC), both highlighting Balami’s integrity and trustworthiness for the position.

Eniola Joseph Ojajuni of ANYC and Chief Henderson Henry of NDYC have individually signed statements advocating for Balami’s candidacy.

This call for leadership change comes in the wake of corruption allegations against the current LP chairman, Mr Julius Abure, with accusations of misuse of campaign funds and financial discrepancies amounting to N3.5bn.

Concerns have been raised by supporters of Peter Obi, particularly the Obidient youths, over the impact of these allegations on the party’s future and performance in upcoming elections.

In a recent plea, the CPO national coordinator, Barr. Joshua Ebighiebi, has urged Peter Obi and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, to support Balami’s bid for the LP chairmanship, citing his potential to resolve internal crises and lead the party to success in future elections.

Balami’s suitability for the role has been further endorsed by support groups like the Coalition for New Nigeria (CNN) and the Coalition for Better and Brighter Nigeria (CBBN) who were instrumental in advocating for Peter Obi’s presidential candidacy in the 2023 elections.

Recognized for his people-centric leadership approach, Balami’s past contributions during the 2023 presidential campaigns and his ability to collaborate with various stakeholders have been highlighted as essential qualities for leading the LP.

As the LP seeks to address its current leadership challenges, the upcoming national convention holds significance in selecting officials based on integrity, character, and capacity, with Balami emerging as a unifying candidate with transformative leadership qualities.

The ‘Obidients’ are calling on Peter Obi to prioritize transparency and inclusivity within the party, granting all qualified members, including Obidients, the opportunity to actively participate in party affairs and conventions.

An appeal has been made to Peter Obi to endorse support for Chief Engr. Isaac Balami to ensure the continued strength of the Labour Party in Nigerian politics.
