Human rights advocate and presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, Omoyele Sowore, has lambasted former transportation minister, Rotimi Amaechi over his recent remark about bad governance in Nigeria.

Mr Amaechi, while speaking as a guest at the 2023 TheNiche Annual Lecture held in Lagos State on Friday, criticised Nigerians for tolerating corrupt politicians and shying away from fighting bad governance which has hindered the growth and progress of the country.

Amaechi condemned his fellow countrymen for being docile and tolerant of the malfeasance of politicians.

Reacting to this at the Joint Action Front Symposium held at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State on Saturday, Mr Sowore questioned Amaechi’s sincerity, asking why he failed to realise there was bad governance in the country while he was enjoying the perks of office.

Amaechi was transportation minister under President Muhammadu Buhari from 2015 to 2022. Before his appointment in 2015, Amaechi was the Governor of Rivers State and he was in office for eight years. Amaechi was previously the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly from 1999 to 2007.

Addressing students at Nigeria’s first university at the weekend, Sowore said, “This is the first time that the leadership of Nigeria at all levels are people who have conquered criminality; they conquered the state, they have conquered the judiciary and they have conquered everything. Tinubu, you know the story. (Godswill) Akpabio, you know the story, (Abdullahi) Ganduje, the man who was stuffing dollars is the party leader so there is nothing left in terms of morality here.

“And they are not afraid of you and forget about these who keep telling tales by moonlight anytime they are out of power. Amaechi, he suddenly discovered that Nigerian leaders are bad. When you were doing railway and taking money and using money that should be used to build railway in Nigeria to go and put a railway elsewhere, a country that doesn’t have anything to do with us, that time you didn’t know.

“When you carried the transportation university from the place where there is transportation to a place where there is no transportation, in Buhari’s hometown.

“Or the Supreme Court man that retired yesterday (retired Justice Musa Dattijo Muhammad) and suddenly became an activist. He suddenly found out that the constitution of the Supreme Court panel that determined the (case involving Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi) wasn’t proper. What happened to the day before they gave their judgment?”

“But this is part of the game, it is to keep fooling you, and in fooling you, continue to create content that distracts you,” he added.
