BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has awarded postgraduate scholarships to its best-graduating students across 121 departments and faculties in the institution.

Dropping this cheering news during the University’s matriculation ceremony, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Florence Banku Obi explained that the scholarship is meant to inspire and motivate beneficiaries and the institution to attend academic excellence in various disciplines

This is as she also reeled out the administration’s scorecard since assuming the mantle of leadership as the Vice Chancellor.

According to her, the management has put the required measures in place to ensure UNICAL ranks among the best institutions of higher learning where its graduates can proudly stand tall among their peers anywhere they find themselves.

She also described the University’s ICT unit as ranking among the best one can find anywhere, adding that the students who passed through the institution can conveniently assess their results from wherever they are without necessarily visiting the school physically for such purpose.

A statement signed by the Personal Assistant to the Vice Chancellor on Media and Communication strategy, Mr Joseph Onigah, said the scholarship scheme is designed in such a way that the beneficiaries, apart from furthering their academic career, would in no distance future place the institution on a good pedestal to compete globally with renowned academic institutions

The statement further pointed out that within the short spell of three years of Prof Obi’s Vice Chancellorship radical changes have been introduced, one of which is the introduction of a confidence-building mechanism among students to air out their grievances irrespective of the status or academic standing of whoever is out to trample on their rights,

Making a veil reference to the Vice Chancellor’s speech during the matriculation ceremony, Mr Onigah further said having raised the parameters of performance, Prof Obi has successfully proved that the blind gap which negatively impacted the female folk in their attempt to mount the saddle since the inception of the institution was a misplaced approach towards achieving set out goals.

He said loads of development projects dotting the university landscape is an eloquent testimony of the fact Prof Obi’s appointment was well-merited and deserved.
