A chieftain of the Labour Party and spokesperson for the Obi/Datti presidential campaign council has stated that if Peter Obi were the president of Nigeria, no member of government or elected officials would propose any bill of irrelevant expenses to him. Okonkwo made this known in an interview with Channels TV Sunrise Daily while speaking regarding the level of financial indiscipline among elected government officials.

According to Okonkwo, when the Federal government proposed to purchase SUV vehicles worth 165 million Naira for every member of the National Assembly, the leadership of the Labour Party kicked against it, and no member of the party opposed the decision. He pointed out that elected party leaders must conform themselves to the ideology of their party members just the way Peter Obi and other LP leaders did.

In his words, “not until elected leaders subordinate themselves to their members ideologies, we will not get it, and that is why I said whoever becomes our president in Nigeria is very important. Peter Obi has done it before in Anambra State. I mean, Peter Obi, when he was a governor, would drive himself to the filling station with only two or three cars and still pay for the fuel he bought. Whatever money he’s giving out, he supervises it. So if Peter Obi had been the President, who are you to tell him that you want to spend 165 million on SUVs because the roads are bad? I mean, the excuse these people give is mind-boggling.”
