Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), has called on President Bola Tinubu to fulfill his campaign promises by addressing the escalating insecurity in Nigeria.
Expressing deep concern over the surge of violence in the Federal Capital Territory, Obi emphasized the detrimental effect of the current security situation on Nigeria’s prospects for foreign investment.
He warned that the recent killings of two abducted young girls in Abuja underscore the urgent need for decisive action from the country’s leaders.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor criticized the worsening insecurity under the past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who had campaigned on promises to tackle security, the economy, and corruption.
Obi highlighted the failure of the present administration to deliver on its promises, noting that despite initial pledges to address security, the economy, and corruption, the situation has deteriorated.
He referred to statements made by the Vice Presidential candidate, Sen Kashim Shettima, during the 2022 Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, where Shettima had outlined responsibilities for tackling security and the economy in the APC government.
Calling for tangible efforts to fulfill campaign promises, Obi urged a halt to foreign trips by government officials until the domestic security situation is addressed.
He stressed that the current state of insecurity is detrimental to Nigeria’s attractiveness to foreign investors and partners.
In conclusion, Obi emphasized the need for sincere efforts to curb violence and insecurity in Nigeria, highlighting that progress in other areas hinges on addressing these pressing issues.
