Legal practitioner Liborous Oshoma has claimed that Peter Obi took three years and nearly 300 witnesses to establish election irregularities in the 2003 Anambra governorship election. Oshoma made these remarks during an interview with Arise News. He explained that currently, due to the limited timeframe of 6 months for election petitions, most petitioners opt to focus on the technical aspects of the election process instead of attempting to prove irregularities.
Oshoma stated, “In the Osun state governorship election case, the Supreme Court rejected documents from INEC‘s backend server alone as insufficient to prove irregularities. The court demanded witnesses and examination of all the BVAS machines. However, it’s impossible to examine all these machines within 6 months. To prove irregularities, petitioners must establish substantial evidence on a polling unit basis, sufficient to influence the outcome. Therefore, petitioners avoid areas that lack time for proper proof and concentrate on the technical aspects they can manage.”

Oshoma added, “In Peter Obi’s case in Anambra State, proving irregularities took nearly three years and involved calling 300 witnesses. Presently, there’s not enough time to call over 100 witnesses. In a senatorial district election case I handled in Abia State, the petitioner called 29 witnesses, but the court still deemed this insufficient for a contest involving around 100 polling units.”
