In the midst of grief, Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, lamented the departure of Ogbonnaya Onu, the former Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, as a massive loss to Nigeria.

Reflecting on Onu’s life, Obi highlighted his gentle and unifying nature as a detribalized Nigerian.

A former governor of Anambra State, Obi praised the late Minister for his commitment to justice, equity, and good governance throughout his career.

Sharing his sentiments on X platform, Obi expressed, “The news of the passing of my esteemed elder brother, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the pioneer civilian governor of Abia State and former minister of science, technology, and innovation, fills me with profound sorrow.

“Dr. Onu epitomized a true gentleman, a patriot, and a Nigerian who transcended tribal affiliations in his service to the nation. His noteworthy contributions as an educator and writer significantly advanced our educational landscape.”

“A proponent of peace and national advancement, Dr. Onu staunchly advocated for justice, equity, and good governance. He dedicated himself to the progress of our nation.”

“Recognizing the imperative shift from consumerism to local production, he championed several initiatives to enhance domestic production for national development.”
