previous governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, compared the security records of Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Yar’Adua with those of previous presidents Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.
Speaking at a panel discussion at the Centre for Values in Leadership’s Annual Lecture and International Leadership Symposium, Obi said that the existing system is inherently broken since governors do not have the authority to handle security-related issues.
Obi stated, “There is always a difference between one president and another.” “We cannot draw comparisons between the current administration and that of Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Yar’Adua.”
According to Obi, governors had considerable control over state security under Yar’Adua and Obasanjo. He referred to his time serving as governor of Anambra, when he was given the power to fire Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and made security decisions with the president’s approval immediately.
“The governor must be accountable and in command of the state,” stated Obi. Thus, we require a president who is committed to granting the governors the power to take action.
