Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has voiced solidarity with nurses amidst concerns over recent directives issued by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). The council’s circular stipulates that applicants seeking certification verification for foreign nursing boards and councils must possess a minimum of two years of post-qualification experience.
Obi has urged the NMCN to reconsider these conditions, emphasizing the importance of not hindering nurses’ opportunities for global employment.
In his statement, Obi stressed the significance of Nigeria’s nursing workforce on the global stage, noting that the country ranks third in demand for nurses worldwide. He emphasized the need to ensure that Nigerian nurses are able to access international job opportunities and contribute to the nation’s economy through their remittances.
The former Presidential candidate proposed a strategic investment in nursing education across Nigeria, advocating for increased support for colleges of nursing sciences at the local level. He believes that by empowering nurses and facilitating their access to global employment opportunities, Nigeria can harness their potential to drive economic growth and generate much-needed foreign exchange.
Obi called upon the government to provide comprehensive support to nursing schools across the country, emphasizing the critical role of investment in nurturing and celebrating the contributions of nurses to the nation’s development.
In light of Obi’s plea, there is anticipation for potential reconsideration of the NMCN’s directives, as stakeholders assess the implications of the council’s policies on Nigeria’s healthcare workforce and global competitiveness in the nursing profession.
