Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, has stated that the presidency of former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Musa Yar’Adua cannot be compared to that of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and President Bola Tinubu, particularly regarding security challenges in Nigeria.

Obi highlighted that during the administration of Obasanjo, state governors were in charge of security in their respective states, unlike the current situation.

He advocated for granting more powers to state governors to effectively address the security challenges in their domains.

Speaking during a panel discussion at the Annual Lecture and International Leadership Symposium of the Centre for Values in Leadership (CVL) in Lagos on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor emphasized the need for a president who is willing to empower governors to take decisive actions on security matters.

Obi recalled his experience during Obasanjo’s presidency, where he requested the removal of Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and had it granted.

He also mentioned that during Yar’Adua’s presidency, he took decisions on security matters with the authority of the President, and there was a monthly conversation between the President and the Governors.

According to Obi, “The governor has to be in charge of the state and be responsible. So, we need a President who is determined to give the governor authority to do something.”
