In a surprising turn of events, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State conducted parallel governorship primaries, resulting in the emergence of two candidates to contest the September 21, 2024, gubernatorial election. Incumbent Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu and Asue Ighodalo were both elected as candidates, each emerging from a separate primary held concurrently in Benin City, the capital of Edo State.
Philip Shaibu secured victory in one of the primaries, garnering 300 votes, while Asue Ighodalo emerged victorious in the other, obtaining 577 votes at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. The governorship primary committee, chaired by Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal, who oversaw the proceedings.
According to Lawal, a total of 594 delegates were elected to participate in the primaries, with 585 delegates eligible to vote. According to Lawal’s final calculation, Asue Ighodalo won his faction’s primary with 577 votes. On the other hand, Philip Shaibu received only one vote in his faction’s primary.
This development underscores the existing factions within the PDP in Edo State and adds a layer of complexity to the forthcoming gubernatorial election. The party now faces the challenge of resolving internal differences and presenting a unified front ahead of the election to maximise its chances of success.
