Apex Igbo group known as Ohanaeze Ndigbo Thursday commended President Bola Tinubu for hinting on releasing Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who has been in the custody of the Directorate of State Service (DSS) for 3 years.

Ohaneze in a statement released by Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, secretary general of the group, opined that release of Kanu will soften the ground for Tinubu in 2027.

The group urged the president not to welcome some politicians who would want to take the glory of releasing Kanu.

The statement reads, “The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, acknowledges and commends President Tinubu’s contemplation of releasing Kanu in December 2023. We believe that such a decision if implemented, would have significant implications for the political landscape in the Southeast.

“It has come to our attention that certain mischievous Igbo political elites and deviant opportunists are attempting to take undue credit for Kanu’s potential release. Ohanaeze Ndigbo urges President Tinubu not to entertain any visits or demands from these individuals, as the credit for Kanu’s release should solely be attributed to him.

“Furthermore, we emphasise that the effects of Kanu’s release will gradually diminish the rising popularity of both Peter Obi and Simon Ekpa in the South-east. Politically, the Igbo nation will consider President Tinubu as a viable candidate over Obi in the 2027 elections. Additionally, from a security perspective, Ekpa’s disruptive activities and terrorist tendencies in the South-east will be consigned to the annals of history.”
