The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has invaded the secretariat of the Labour Party (LP) to protest the party’s national convention planned for March 17.

The Congress also demanded sack of the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, just as it has directed its state councils and political commission to picket Labour Party secretariats nationwide.

However, the police has stopped the protesting workers from entering the party Secretariat.

The NLC leadership accused Abure of planning to hold a “secret” convention without the inputs of major stakeholders.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has

A letter signed by the chairperson of the NLC Political Commission, Titus Amba, and the secretary, Chris Uyot dated Tuesday, March 19, 2024 contained this order.

The letter was sequel to a meeting of the NLC National Political Commission and the leadership of the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees, which took place virtually on March 19, 2024.

“That given the intransigence of the National Chairman of the Labour Party to unilaterally hold a National Convention of the Labour Party, financial rascality and contempt for the leadership of the NLC, the NLC State Councils and State Political Committees should mobilise workers to picket all the State Secretariats of the Labour Party, scheduled for Wednesday, 20th March 2024,” the letter partly read.

It would be recalled that the National Working Committee of the Labour Party (LP) had on March16 accused the President of the NLC Joe Ajaero of interfering I the activities of the party.

The allegation was a reaction to the open letter written on Friday by the political wing of the NLC, the Nigeria Labour Congress Political Commission.

The letter accused Abure and the NWC of planning a secret national convention in Umuahia, the capital of Abia State, on March 27 and together with some supporters of the LP presidential candidate Peter Obi asked Abure to resign.

The LP has since responded through its spokesperson Obiora Ifoh who accused the NLC, among others of forcing the LP’s national convention on the party. The convention has been fixed for March 27.

Frustrated by the crisis, the Lp has challenged Ajaero to step down as NLC president and contest for the position of the national chairman in the forthcoming convention.
