Nigeria’s Former vice president Atiku Abubakar has called for a coalition of opposition parties against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, said opposition parties need to come together to save Nigeria’s democracy from the APC’s “dictatorship.”
Atiku’s defeat in the 2023 election has been partly attributed to the division among opposition candidates. Analysts have said that a coalition of the three frontline opposition candidates would have given them a victory over Tinubu.
Atiku’s call for electoral reforms also comes amid criticism of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has been accused of conducting flawed elections. Atiku said INEC conducted the “worst-ever general election in the country” in 2023, and called for reforms such as electronic voting.
In October 2023 the Supreme Court dismissed legal challenges filed by Atiku and Labour Party’s Peter Obi contesting Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 election, solidifying the ruling party’s position.
