National Chairman Not In Edo Governorship Race

The Labour Party, LP in Nigeria says the National Chairman of the Party, Mr. Julius Abure is not contesting for the Edo State governorship election next year.

In a statement made available by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Obiora Ifoh stated that the “National Chairman, Mr. Julius Abure is not and has no intention to contest for the Edo state governorship election slated for 2024.”

Mr. Ifoh stated that there was need to make the clarification and that “This clarification is as a result of several inquiries from the media and other party members after a group at the national headquarters of our party on Monday urged Abure to join the contest.”

Mr. Ifoh further stated that the party was calling on its party members in Edo state particularly, aspirants for the governorship election to remain focused and to go ahead with their consultations.

He assured aspirants that the party would go into the election in line with the party’s rules and guidelines as stipulated by the party’s constitution.

He noted, “The group, while making their demands on Abure, said that his acceptance to run for the election will help the party ward off non-party members who are bent on hijacking the party primaries ahead of the governorship election.”

Responding to their demands, the National Publicity Secretary “informed them that the National Chairman, Julius Abure has no intention of contesting the Edo state governorship election.”

He also stated, “The National Chairman is preoccupied with helping our Presidential Candidate in the February 25 election, Peter Obi to reclaim his mandate.

The National Chairman “is also about to embark on a membership drive across the states of the Federation in a way to reposition the party ahead of future elections, particularly, the off season elections in Imo, Bayelsa and Kogi states.”
