A Kaduna–based musical artist and founder of Greater Love Ministries (GLM), Dr. Haruna Goroh, has alleged that the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, had planned to conduct a credible 2023 general election but was hypnotised by irresistible money thrown at him by Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The remarks were made during an exclusive interview with Rudolf Okonkwo on 90MinutesAfrica on Sunday.
Goroh, one of the most fervent supporters of the Labour Party presidential candidate in the last election, Mr. Peter Obi, said it is only the intervention of God that can save anyone from the former Lagos State governor if he is determined to compromise an individual.
“I think Mahmoud Yakubu was determined to do the right thing – from his body language and speeches, but when money came, everything was shredded,” the political commentator alleged.
He argued that the bible analogy where an older child agreed to forfeit the rights that came with the position and become the younger one because of hunger depicts the situation in Nigeria today. He said that poverty had been weaponized in the country to the extent that most people are only concerned about their immediate survival.
“A person operating on a survival mentality does not think about the future, but only the now,” Dr. Goroh lamented. He noted that what is happening in Nigeria has gone beyond the issue of election rigging and is now about “buying up and hypnotising people with money.”
Many Nigerians believed that the president’s approval of billions of naira for the judiciary and legislature as part of palliatives to cushion the effects of petrol subsidy removal is aimed at compromising the members. According to the Kaduna-based clergyman, Tinubu’s action is designed to “take the nation hostage using money.”
