Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the upcoming 2023 general elections, has announced that the party has engaged an external auditor to scrutinize its accounts.

Last Monday, Oluchi Opara, the national treasurer of the Labour Party, accused the national chairman, Julius Abure, of misappropriating N3.5 billion. In response to these allegations, the party suspended Opara, alleging that she was being influenced by external forces with the intent to harm the LP.

Abure, on the other hand, has expressed his determination to take legal action against Opara for defamation. Addressing the situation during a press briefing in Abuja, Obi stated, “We will account for everything now that we have an independent person who will tell us which way forward.”

Accompanied by Aisha Yesufu, a member of his 2023 campaign team, Obi clarified, “I’m not involved in the party’s management and the campaign accounts. The funds I received during the election were deposited into accounts that were properly managed because I anticipated situations like this. I assure you, we will account for everything.”

Regarding the party’s affairs, Obi emphasized the importance of the independent auditor, urging the public to come forward with any information on the whereabouts of the alleged millions and billions paid out. “We now have an independent person who will tell us which way forward, that’s why I’m calling on every member of the public with leads to where these millions and billions were paid to come forward,” he stated.
