The National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP), Barrister Julius Abure, has debunked allegation of a plot by his party to field a weak candidate in the Edo state gubernatorial election to make it easy for the ruling party to win the state in the forthcoming governorship elections.

Abure at a press conference on Tuesday said there was no truth in the allegation because Nigeria had suffered the challenge of bad leadership mainly caused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the (All Progressives Congress).

Abure admitted that though the Labour Party was largely transactional but the entry of Peter Obi in the party changed the tide causing influx of people in the party.

The LP National Chairman assured that under his leadership, there was no plot with the ruling party in Edo state to bungle the chances of popular candidate come September governorship 2024.

He assured the people of Edo state that their investments in the party would yield the desired result to becoming a ruling party after the election in September 2024.

“Now that I have the privilege, as the national chairman of this party, I cannot be seen doing less than what I believe in. I, therefore, want to assure the people of Edo, that the Labour Party primaries will be transparent, will be competitive. Members of the party will determine who become the guber candidate of the party.

“I am also saying this against the backdrop that there are also accusations that I am aligning with the governor to bring a weak candidate, an unpopular candidate, that we have been bribed to shortchange the party.

“I can say clearly that we are the only opposition party in Nigeria and our presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has said it very clearly that we will play the role of opposition effectively.

“So having this opportunity that history has been placed on our hands, having this opportunity of leading this party at this time, especially, at a time when Nigeria was at a crossroads, where nothing is working in the country, we cannot compromise the integrity of our party.

“I cannot shortchange my party, I cannot do any dis-service to the party. I will remain a worthy, credible ambassador of the party.”
