During an event organized by the Federal Ministry of Works to address concerns related to the compensation of property owners affected by the Lagos-Calabar coastal road project, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, accused Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), of inciting the people of the Southeast, particularly the uninformed, against the federal government.
Umahi expressed his displeasure with Obi’s alleged actions, stating that the former governor of Anambra State had failed to advocate effectively for the people, despite leading them into difficulties.
He accused Obi of spreading misinformation that could incite unrest among the population.
The Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project, spanning 700 kilometers and estimated to cost the federal government N15 trillion, has been the subject of controversy, particularly regarding the demolition of the Landmark Beach Resort valued at $200 million to make way for the road’s right-of-way.
Following the demolition, Paul Onwuanibe, the Group CEO of Landmark, voiced concerns about the impact on businesses, livelihoods, and employment opportunities in the area.
Obi had previously criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu for its handling of the project, emphasizing the need to prioritize national security, poverty alleviation, healthcare, and education over controversial infrastructure projects. He condemned the reported demolitions within the project’s designated right-of-way, citing the adverse effects on livelihoods and investments.
However, Umahi defended the government’s actions regarding the project, refuting allegations of inhumanity towards Landmark and its stakeholders. He urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from making judgmental statements that could incite unrest, emphasizing his personal involvement in addressing the concerns raised about the project.
Umahi’s remarks underscore the ongoing tensions surrounding the Lagos-Calabar highway project and highlight the need for constructive dialogue and engagement to resolve the issues at hand.
