In a recent media briefing, Peter Obi, the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), emphasized the necessity of a thorough investigation into alleged financial irregularities involving Barrister Julius Abure, the National Chairman.

Addressing the press on Thursday, Obi provided insights into the financial management of the 2023 Obi-Datti Presidential campaign organization, stressing the importance of transparency in handling party finances.

“The LP has designated me as its leader, and we must ensure transparency in our financial dealings. Therefore, we urge the appointment of a reputable audit firm to scrutinize and rectify any discrepancies,” stated Obi.

The LP’s National Working Committee (NWC) recently imposed a six-month suspension on Mrs. Oluchi Oparah, the embattled National Treasurer, amidst allegations of financial mismanagement.

Oparah, who intends to challenge the suspension in court, accuses the NWC of prejudiced actions, citing a lack of opportunity to defend herself adequately.

Earlier accusations by Oparah implicated Barrister Julius Abure in the misappropriation of N3.5bn raised through nomination form sales and fundraising activities leading up to the 2023 general elections.

During an appearance on Arise TV’s ‘Good Morning Show,’ Oparah further alleged collusion between the LP’s leadership and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.

However, LP’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Obiora Ifoh, dismissed Oparah’s claims, labeling her as a mole instigated by dissenting factions within the party.

Obi, in his address, also called upon support groups and individuals who received campaign funds to provide an account of their expenditures, emphasizing the importance of financial transparency and accountability.

“We appreciate the support received from various quarters, but it’s crucial for recipients to ensure proper accounting for the funds allocated to them,” urged Obi.
