Labour Party’s Contingency Plan In Case Peter Obi Loses at Tribunal.
As the eagerly anticipated judgment day approaches, the Labour Party (LP) has unveiled its strategy should Peter Obi not achieve a favorable outcome at the tribunal.
The tribunal, scheduled to announce its verdict on Wednesday, is tasked with examining the petitions challenging the Independent National Electoral Commission’s declaration of Bola Tinubu as the winner of the 2023 presidential election.
The panel of tribunal justices assigned to deliver the verdict comprises Chairman Justice Haruna Tsammani, Justice Stephen Adah of the Court of Appeal (Asaba Division), Justice Monsurat Bolaji-Yusuf from the Court of Appeal (Asaba Division), Justice Moses Ugo (Court of Appeal, Kano), and Justice Abba Mohammed of the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal.
To ensure transparency and openness, the Chief Registrar of the Court of Appeal headquarters, Umar Bangari, has announced that the tribunal’s proceedings will be broadcast live on television stations, allowing Nigerians to observe the process.
Kehinde Edun, the National Legal Adviser of the Labour Party, confirmed that the party has a clear course of action if the tribunal’s judgment does not align with their expectations. Edun expressed confidence in the LP’s case, emphasizing the evidence supporting their position.
When asked about the possibility of protest in the event of an unfavorable ruling, Edun dismissed the notion, stating that the LP would opt for a more legal avenue. He highlighted that the tribunal is not the final court in this matter but serves as the initial stage for Presidential election disputes. The LP is prepared to escalate the matter to the Supreme Court if necessary.
Edun stated, “No, there is no reason for protest. We still have an option. Of course, the Tribunal is not the final court. It is just the court of first instance for the presidential election. The court of appeal is the court of first instance. We still have an option to head to the Supreme Court. What is the reason to protest after the judgment on Wednesday? If we find a reason to appeal further, we will do it.
“The issue of protest does not arise now at all. If you are dissatisfied, you can still go upstairs. But we don’t think that will even happen. We are going to get the victory, but if it doesn’t go our way, we can now consider the reason for the outcome. When we look at the reason and are dissatisfied, we will go to the Supreme Court,” he added.”
