Labour Party Denies Responsibility for NLC/TUC Insurrection, Urges Minister To  Address Real Culprits

Daud Olatunji

The Labour Party has  categorically denied any involvement in the recent insurrection and airport attack attributed to supporters of Peter Obi, Joe Ajaero, and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC).

The LP emphasized that it  had been unfairly blamed for actions committed by what they referred to as ‘mischievously afflicted’ individuals.

The LP’s statement, signed by Dr. Abayomi Arabsmbi, the National Publicity Secretary, refuted claims made by the Hon Minister of Aviation and Aero Space Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, who had warned against the LP’s alleged attempts to destroy the labor movement in Nigeria.

According to the LP, it was supporters of the Peter Obi / Sen Athan ACHONU/ Joe Ajaero group, masquerading as labour union members, who blocked the road to Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja under the pretext of avenging an attack on Joe Ajaero in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.

The LP accused Joe Ajaero of pursuing a provocative political agenda aimed at ‘Conquering Nigeria’ under the guise of advocating for the welfare of Imo State workers.

The LP praised the timely intervention of the Nigerian Army and Police in quelling what they termed ‘unwarranted insurrection.’

They questioned Joe Ajaero’s indiscriminate use of the NLC to further his personal political and economic conquest of Imo State, describing it as an attempt to overthrow democracy.

The LP also criticized Joe Ajaero for advocating the postponement of a scheduled election and proceeding with a strike despite a restraining order from the National Industrial Court.

The LP commended the efforts of Mr. Bayo Onanuga, the Hon Minister of Labour and Employment, and the Attorney General and Minister of Justice in taking judicial steps to halt the impending strike by obtaining an order of interim injunction from the NATIONAL INDUSTRIAL COURT OF NIGERIA (NICN) to prevent the strike.

The LP emphasized that they had no responsibility to stop the alleged insurrection, placing the blame squarely on Peter Obi, Joe Ajaero, and their supporters.

In conclusion, the LP urged all Nigerians to protect the nation’s democratic institutions and stability. They clarified that their mission was to defend the government and institutions of Nigeria, not any political party.

The press release ended with a firm denial of allegations that the LP had been bought over or sponsored by the APC, dismissing them as the bitter claims of ‘political sore losers who have not been able to get over their devastating defeat and complete trouncing at the polls.’
