Dr. Fabian Benjamin, the spokesperson for the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has shed light on the admission process and emphasized that high scores in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) do not guarantee admission.
In an interview with Arise Television on Monday, Dr. Benjamin clarified that admission is contingent upon the cutoff marks set by individual schools and specific departments.
He highlighted the importance of understanding the purpose behind conducting the examination and cautioned against misinterpreting its outcomes.
Dr. Benjamin emphasized that JAMB’s examination is not a pass-fail test but rather a selection exercise.
He noted that candidates scoring below 200 are not necessarily considered to have failed, as the purpose of the examination varies based on individual goals and the requirements of different institutions and programs.
He provided examples to illustrate the complexity of the admission process, stating that a candidate with a score of 300 may not be admitted to a particular program if the demand exceeds the available slots, while another candidate with a lower score may secure admission depending on the program and institution.
Dr. Benjamin further explained that admission decisions are influenced by factors such as the ranking order of universities, the capacity of programs, and the level of subscription to specific courses.
