The statement by Peter Obi on N3bn social register verification

During the former Anambra State governor’s statement on Wednesday, he expressed surprise at the approval of N3 billion by the current administration for the verification of the national register of the poor. He remarked that such allocation of funds could only happen in Nigeria.

Peter Obi further commented that if the equivalent amount spent on verification were prudently and transparently managed, it could have made a significant impact. He questioned the rationale behind approving such a substantial sum for the verification of the national register of the poor, emphasizing that it could have been directed towards actual poverty alleviation.

Obi also raised concerns about the lack of regular verification of the data for poverty alleviation and urged leaders to prioritize expenditure in critical areas of national development and security.

He highlighted the need to address the issue of the cost of governance in Nigeria urgently, citing instances where the approved amount for verification exceeded the budget for critical infrastructure like the National Library, which he deemed seemingly abandoned.

Obi stressed the significance of prioritizing expenditure and focusing on critical areas of national development and security to overcome the challenges facing the nation. He underscored the importance of sacrificing personal comfort for the good of society and caring for the less privileged to combat societal ills caused by poverty.
