Peter Obi, the 2023 presidential candidate for the Labour Party, expressed deep sorrow over the severe economic struggles faced by Nigerians, following a tragic incident in Lagos that claimed the lives of seven individuals in a stampede.

The incident occurred as people, including an All Progressives Congress (APC) member named Comfort Adebanjo, sought to purchase rice seized by the Nigerian Customs Service to cope with the country’s economic challenges.

Speaking at an event in Abuja commemorating the first anniversary of the upcoming presidential election, Obi criticized the government’s disproportionate allocation of funds. He highlighted the excessive spending on amenities for politicians, contrasting it with inadequate support for essential services like teaching hospitals.

Obi emphasized the unity that has emerged among Nigerians in the face of widespread hunger and economic hardship, transcending ethnic, linguistic, and regional differences. He expressed dismay over the tragic consequences of citizens grappling with food insecurity, referencing the recent stampede at the Nigerian Customs office where lives were lost.

The former governor decried the misuse of public resources on frivolous ventures, such as lavish refurbishments of government facilities, amidst the country’s escalating challenges. He underscored the urgent need for responsible governance and prudent financial management to address the pressing needs of the population.

As the nation grapples with profound difficulties, Obi called for a shift towards more accountable leadership and a renewed focus on uplifting the welfare of all Nigerians.
